I read this book just as the former ambassador to Ukraine testified before a House Committee. This made me think about Foreign Service ethics and neutrality in politics. The author of Crosshairs, a retired Foreign Service diplomat, seemed to tiptoe around neutrality with a very political story. The narrator, also in Foreign Service and aspiring to greater levels of assignment, describes the path of a close friend who rises to be a candidate for President of the USA. Just when I thought I knew the political party portrayed, I realized that personalities, tactics, issues, campaign strategies, and fundraising could be attributed to any USA political party. The final chapters include the strengths of family love, patriotism, hope, and tradition. I gained an appreciation for the challenges and responsibilities of workers in the United States Foreign Service
